ONGOING COMMERCIAL PROJECT
Rewriting Women into Maritime History is an initiative in which Emilie has been assigned the role of Creative Lead - and Photographer for the contemporary section of the project, the project involves collating material that is spread across archives beginning with the UK & Ireland, and then spreading internationally from 2024 so that accounts of women in the shipping industry can be identified and placed in the public domain for the first time. The project's objectives are to hopefully raise the profile of female shipping expertise, experience, and leadership from the maritime past, help reframe the narrative around women in maritime, and help promote gender equality, diversity, and inclusion.
SHE_SEES is the showcase for the project, highlighting ‘Then, Now and Onward’. Emilie traveled across the UK in 2023 to capture portraits of twenty-three professional women working within a range of maritime roles in the UK.
Phase two is underway, which will involve working with women internationally. Watch this space.
A Film by Emilie Sandy
Edited by Katherine Glynne-Jones
Soundscape by Tom Crawford
This film includes each of the modern-day maritime women featured in the SHE_SEES project. They were asked to describe the essence of their role in three words, these words - or sometimes sentences - are presented alongside their moving portrait.
The film aims to connect the viewer with each of the maritime women of SHE_SEES - spending a moment with them, peacefully reflecting on past stories shared, and new horizons to be had.
